Leveled Swim Lessons

Calm Waters has a unique leveling system- from level 1 and learning how to float, to level 7 mastering Breaststroke and flip turns.

Lessons run Fall (Spetember-November, 7-9 weeks), Winter (Febuary to April, 7-9 weeks), Spring (April-June, 7-9 weeks), and Summer (June-July, 4-6 weeks). Scheduling is determined by school availability. Scheduled holidays and school vacations are accounted for.

Level 1: Getting comfortable in the water.

Typical ages: 4 Years old to 5 years old.

Children will learn to:

  • Blow Bubbles

  • Float independently on belly and back

  • Go underwater (bobs)

  • Kick on their belly with a rock-it noodle

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Do a complete bob underwater

  • Hold a belly float independently for 3 seconds with face in and bubbles

  • Hold a back float independently for 5 seconds

Level 2: Kicking Independently

Typical ages: 4 years old to 6 years old

Children will learn to:

  • Kick on their belly and back across the width of the pool

  • Learn Streamline, press off the wall in streamline

  • Have correct kicking abilities (straight legs, no bicycle kick)

  • Retrieve items from the bottom of the pool (shallow end)

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Kick Independently on their belly and back

  • Listen to instruction from teachers

  • Basic arm over arm with a barbell across the width of the pool

  • Recognize the lifeguard and importance of simple safety rules

  

Level 3: Arm over arm and basic freestyle

Typical ages: 5 years old to 7 years old.

Children will learn to:

  • Stroke across the water in basic freestyle

  • Learn drills to focus on hand placement during freestyle

  • Combine arm movements and leg movements

  • Blow bubbles while their face is underwater during arm movement

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Independently move across the water in freestyle coordinated motion.

  • Note: Freestyle does not need to include breathing to the side to pass this level.

  • Have listening skills for criticism and directions

  • Shout for "Help" in floating position

Level 4: Freestyle technique mastering

Typical ages: 6 years old to 8 years old.

Children will learn to:

  • Learn more complex freestyle drills

  • Learn breathing to the side while swimming

  • Focus on hand placement

  • Focus on kick speed

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Swim across the pool width without pushing off the bottom

  • Swim from the "red line" of the pool to the deep end of the pool

  • Swim full freestyle, including breathing to the side.

  • Have listening skills and understand technical directions

  • Recognize safe and unsafe practices around the pool. Throwing assist to someone in need.

Level 5: Backstroke

Typical ages: 6 years old to 8 years old.

Children will learn to:

  • Learn rotations from Freestyle swimming to their back

  • Rotate arms in backstroke

  • Swim in the deep end of the pool

  • Sitting dives from the pool edge

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Swim Freestyle for 25 yards

  • Swim Backstroke for 15 yards

  • Safety Recovery Stroke

 

Level 6: Breaststroke Basics

Typical ages: 7 Years old to 11 years old

Children will learn to:

  • Use their legs in Breaststroke kick

  • Use their arms in Breaststroke pull

  • Out-turn their feet for correct kick

  • Kneeling dives from the pool edge

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Master Breaststroke kick

  • "Skull drill" across the width of the pool

  • Swim 25 yards freestyle

  • Swim 25 yards backstroke

Level 7: Refining Breaststroke techniques

Typical ages: 7 years old to 13 years old.

Children will learn to:

  • "Pull, Breathe, Kick, Glide" in Breaststroke

  • Swim Breaststroke cohesively

  • Learn Dolphin Kick

  • Learn flip turns

  • Standing Dives from pool edge

To graduate to the next level, children must:

  • Have a technical correct Breaststroke

  • Swim 50 yards Freestyle

  • Swim 25 yards Backstroke

  • Swim 5 yards underwater dolphin kick in streamline

 

Congratulations! You have completed all Leveled swimming lessons at Calm Waters! You are ready to move onto a Swim Team!
